Ash Wednesday 2028: Date, History & Significance
Wednesday
Wednesday, 1 March 2028
Ash Wednesday 2028 is on Wednesday, 1 March 2028. Ash Wednesday begins Lent, the forty-day season of fasting, prayer and almsgiving that prepares for Easter. At the day's Mass or service, the priest marks each person's forehead with ashes in the sign of the cross, saying 'Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return' or 'Repent, and believe in the Gospel.'
What is Ash Wednesday?
The ashes are made by burning the previous year's blessed Palm Sunday fronds. It is a day of fast (one full meal) and abstinence from meat for adult Catholics, and many Christians take on a Lenten discipline — giving something up, or adding prayer, giving and self-denial — for the forty days. The ash cross is often worn through the day.
The story of Ash Wednesday
Ash and sackcloth are, throughout the Bible, signs of grief and repentance — Job, Nineveh, Daniel. The Church took up the ashes for the start of Lent as a public admission of mortality and sin, and a turning back to God, echoing the forty days Jesus fasted in the wilderness before his ministry.

The astronomical basis
Ash Wednesday is dated by 46 days before Easter — a Wednesday (movable); February or March. The movable feasts of the Christian year (Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost) are all reckoned from Easter, which is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox; the fixed feasts (Christmas, Epiphany, the Annunciation, All Saints and All Souls) keep the same civil date each year.
The date is set by the Hindu lunisolar calendar and shifts against the Gregorian year.
