Dhamma Chakra Day 2028: Date, History & Significance

Saturday

Saturday, 14 October 2028

Dhamma Chakra Day 2028 is on Saturday, 14 October 2028. Dharma Chakra Day is the civic and pan-Buddhist observance of the Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath, marked on the Asadha full moon — the same day as Asalha Puja. Since 2020 it has been observed nationally in India as 'Dharma Chakra Day', with the Government and the International Buddhist Confederation holding programmes and the President or Prime Minister addressing them.

What is Dhamma Chakra Day?

The day marks the 'turning of the wheel of Dhamma' — the moment the teaching passed from one enlightened person to the world. Programmes include the chanting of the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta by monks from across the Buddhist world, exhibitions, and reflections on the Buddha's message as a shared Indian and global heritage. It runs alongside the religious Asalha Puja kept by Buddhist communities.

The story of Dhamma Chakra Day

The first sermon is the 'Dhammacakkappavattana' — 'the setting in motion of the wheel of the Dhamma'. The wheel (dharmachakra), with its spokes for the Eightfold Path, is the emblem of the teaching and appears at the centre of the Indian national flag, taken from the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath. Dharma Chakra Day holds up that continuity — from the deer park sermon to the symbol of the modern republic.

History

India began observing Dharma Chakra Day nationally in July 2020, on the initiative of the Ministry of Culture and the International Buddhist Confederation, to mark Asadha Purnima; it complements the older religious Asalha Puja and Guru Purnima on the same full moon.

How Dhamma Chakra Day is observed

  1. Government and International Buddhist Confederation programmes mark the first sermon, with chanting by monks from many traditions, often at Sarnath.
  2. Viharas hold recitation of the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, and lay followers offer dana and take the precepts.
  3. Talks and seminars on the Buddha's teaching are held in universities and Buddhist centres.

Regional variations

  • New Delhi, Sarnath, and Buddhist institutions. Government and IBC programmes, chanting of the first sermon, exhibitions, and addresses; alongside the religious Asalha Puja at viharas.

Festive foods

  • Dana food — Food offered to the monks before noon at the vihara.

Frequently asked questions

When is Dhamma Chakra Day 2028?

Dhamma Chakra Day 2028 is on Saturday, 14 October 2028. Dhammachakra Pravartan Din (14 Oct) falls on Saturday, 14 October 2028. Ambedkarite Buddhists mark the 1956 Deekshabhoomi conversion on the Gregorian date, 14 October.

How is Dharma Chakra Day different from Asalha Puja?

They are the same day — the Asadha full moon — and the same event, the first sermon. Asalha Puja is the religious observance kept by Buddhist communities; Dharma Chakra Day is the civic, national and pan-Buddhist form India has marked since 2020.

What is the dharmachakra?

The 'wheel of Dhamma' — the eight-spoked wheel standing for the Noble Eightfold Path and, more broadly, for the Buddha's teaching set in motion at Sarnath. The Ashoka Chakra at the centre of the Indian flag is a form of it.
