What is Ganesh Utsav?

The household observance is the Bhadrapada Ganesh Chaturthi puja continued for one and a half, three, five, seven or ten days by family custom, ending with the immersion of that home's idol. The public festival adds the pandal — a decorated marquee with a large idol, cultural programmes, and crowds for darshan each evening.

The Sarvajanik (public) Ganeshotsav was reshaped by Lokmanya Tilak in Pune in 1893 as a way to gather people across caste for talks, music and organisation under cover of worship during colonial rule. It is now the defining festival of Maharashtra and strong in Goa, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra, with eco-friendly clay idols and tank immersion increasingly the norm.

The story of Ganesh Utsav

The festival's deity-story is that of Ganesha's birth and his elephant head (see Ganesh Chaturthi). The utsav's own history is modern: a Peshwa-era palace celebration revived and made public by Tilak, who used the gathering to build national feeling; the immersion procession grew from that civic form.

History

Household Ganesh Chaturthi is old and pan-Indian; the Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav dates to 1893, when Tilak and contemporaries in Pune turned the private puja into a mass public festival. It spread through the Bombay Presidency and, in the twentieth century, across the Deccan and to Indian communities worldwide.

How Ganesh Utsav is observed

  1. Clay Ganesha idols are installed at home and in public pandals on Chaturthi, and kept for one and a half, five, seven or ten days.
  2. Aarti is sung morning and evening, 'Sukhkarta Dukhharta' in Maharashtra; the public festival was revived by Lokmanya Tilak in 1893.
  3. The idols are immersed in processions with drums and dancing, the largest on Anant Chaturdashi; eco-friendly idols and artificial ponds are now widely used.

Regional variations

  • Maharashtra and Goa. Home idols for 1.5–10 days and huge mandal pandals; the Lalbaugcha Raja, Dagdusheth and Pune mandals; visarjan processions on Anant Chaturdashi.
  • Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra, Tamil Nadu. Gowri-Ganesha and Vinayaka Chavithi kept at home and in pandals, with Khairatabad's tall idol in Hyderabad among the largest.

Festive foods

  • Ukadiche modak — Steamed rice-flour dumplings filled with coconut and jaggery; 21 are offered.
  • Kozhukattai — The South Indian modak, sweet or savoury.

The astronomical basis

Ganesh Utsav begins on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi — the fourth tithi of the bright fortnight, in August or September — and runs to Anant Chaturdashi, the fourteenth tithi, ten days later. The installation puja is done in the madhyahna (midday) window when Chaturthi prevails.

A lunar date: Chaturthi of the bright half of Bhadrapada drifts about 11 days earlier each solar year, then jumps back ~19 days when a leap (Adhika) month is inserted.
