What is Hariyali Teej?

The fast is kept for a long and happy married life, or for a good husband; many keep it nirjala. Parvati is worshipped in the evening — often as a clay image with Shiva, made and decorated at home — with the Teej katha, green bangles, and a sindhara gift of clothes, sweets (ghewar) and cosmetics sent by the girl's parents or in-laws.

It is above all a festival of the maike, the mother's home: newly married women return to their parents for Teej, and the songs are of longing for the maike and the monsoon. Rajasthan holds public Teej processions with an idol of the goddess; Nimbu-Kair, ghewar and malpua are the foods.

The story of Hariyali Teej

Parvati, in an earlier birth as Sati, gave up her body; reborn as the daughter of the mountain, she resolved to win Shiva as her husband and did tapas for a hundred and eight lifetimes, keeping this Tritiya fast. Shiva, at last satisfied, accepted her, and the day is kept as the anniversary of that acceptance — the model of a wife's devotion rewarded.

History

The Teej fasts (Hariyali in Shravana, Kajari in Bhadrapada Krishna, Hartalika in Bhadrapada Shukla) are a set of monsoon women's vratas of North and Central India, described in the vrata nibandhas; Hariyali Teej is strongest in Rajasthan, Haryana, western UP, Punjab and among Marwaris.

The astronomical basis

Hariyali Teej is Shravana Shukla Tritiya — the third tithi of the bright fortnight of Shravana, two days before Nag Panchami, in July or August. The Parvati puja is done in the evening; where the tithi does not touch the third day's afternoon, the almanac fixes it.

A lunar date: Tritiya of the bright half of Shravana drifts about 11 days earlier each solar year, then jumps back ~19 days when a leap (Adhika) month is inserted.

How is Hariyali Teej different from Hartalika Teej?

Both are monsoon fasts for Parvati and Shiva. Hariyali Teej is Shravana Shukla Tritiya, a greener, more festive day of swings and songs; Hartalika Teej, Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya about a month later, is a stricter nirjala fast with a night vigil.

Why is it called 'green' Teej?

It falls at the height of the monsoon, when the land is freshest green; women wear green, and the swings are hung in the newly leafed trees. 'Hariyali' is the greenery of the season.
