What is Independence Day?

The Red Fort ceremony includes the 21-gun salute, the national anthem, the Prime Minister's speech reviewing the year and setting out priorities, and a flypast showering flower petals. Schools and colleges hold flag-hoisting, patriotic songs, march-pasts and cultural programmes; kite-flying is a tradition in the North and West. Gallantry and service awards are announced. It is a dry day.

The story of Independence Day

The Indian freedom movement ran from the Revolt of 1857 through the founding of the Congress (1885), the Swadeshi and Non-Cooperation movements, the Salt March, the revolutionary struggle, the Indian National Army, and Quit India (1942). At midnight on 14–15 August 1947, as power was transferred, Jawaharlal Nehru spoke of India's 'tryst with destiny'. Independence came with the Partition of the subcontinent and the creation of Pakistan, at a great human cost.

What is the difference between Independence Day and Republic Day?

Why does the Prime Minister hoist the flag on Independence Day but the President on Republic Day?

By convention, Independence Day belongs to the head of government (the Prime Minister, who led the movement's political successors), and Republic Day to the head of state (the President), because the Republic and its Constitution vest sovereignty in the people through that office.
