What is International Women's Day?

Governments, companies and organisations hold events on the year's UN theme, on women's safety, health, education, work and leadership, and honour women's achievements; the Nari Shakti Puraskar, India's highest civilian award for women, is presented around this time. Rallies and campaigns press for legal and social change; the day is also increasingly used for commercial promotions, which some criticise as diluting its purpose.

The story of International Women's Day

Women's Day grew from labour and socialist movements in the United States and Europe around 1908–1917, tied to demands for the vote, better pay and working conditions; a women's strike in Petrograd on 8 March (23 February old style) 1917 helped begin the Russian Revolution. The UN adopted 8 March as International Women's Day in 1975, International Women's Year.
