What is Jyeshtha Gauri?

Two Gauris — standing masks or metal faces mounted on decorated bodies, often holding stalks of the terda plant — are installed beside the Ganesh idol and dressed as brides with a nauvari sari and full ornament. Day one is Avahan (welcome, with footprints drawn from the door); day two is Pujan, with sixteen vegetables, sixteen types of bhaji, puran poli and a large naivedya; day three is Visarjan.

It is a women's festival: married women of the house and neighbourhood gather, sing Gauri songs (jhimma, fugadi), and the haldi-kunku exchange is done. The forms vary — Khada Gauri (standing), terda-leaf Gauri, or a kalash Gauri — by family custom.

The story of Jyeshtha Gauri

Gauri comes to her natal home as a married daughter, and the household receives her just as it would a real daughter home for the festival — rice-paste footprints from the threshold to the shrine, a welcome meal, her favourite dishes on the middle day, and a tearful send-off. The two Gauris are taken as Jyeshtha and Kanishtha, the elder and younger sisters, or as Lakshmi and her sister, and in either case as Ganesha's mother arriving to take him home.

History

Jyeshtha Gauri is a domestic Maharashtrian and Konkani festival timed by the nakshatras rather than tithis, folded into the ten days of Ganeshotsav; Gauri as Ganesha's mother comes to take him home. The form and food are governed closely by family and regional tradition.

How Jyeshtha Gauri is observed

  1. During Ganeshotsav in Maharashtra, the two Gauris, Jyeshtha and Kanishtha, are welcomed into the home on the Anuradha nakshatra, with turmeric footprints drawn from the door to the shrine.
  2. On the second day they are worshipped with a meal of sixteen vegetables and puran poli, and married women gather for haldi-kunku.
  3. On the third day the Gauris are given a farewell and immersed.

Regional variations

  • Maharashtra and Goa. Two bride-dressed Gauris beside the Ganesh idol; Avahan on Anuradha, Pujan with the sixteen-vegetable feast on Jyeshtha, Visarjan on Mula. Gauri songs and haldi-kunku.

Festive foods

  • Sola bhajya — A dish of sixteen vegetables cooked for the Gauris.
  • Puran poli — The festive sweet flatbread of the second day.

Why this date

Jyeshtha Gauri Avahan falls on Sunday, 27 August 2028. Gauri (Mahalakshmi) invocation on Anuradha nakshatra during Ganeshotsav.

The astronomical basis

Jyeshtha Gauri runs three days in Bhadrapada Shukla, timed to the Anuradha (Avahan), Jyeshtha (Pujan) and Mula (Visarjan) nakshatras, so its civil dates shift within the Ganeshotsav window in August or September.

A lunar date: the tithi of the bright half of Bhadrapada drifts about 11 days earlier each solar year, then jumps back ~19 days when a leap (Adhika) month is inserted.
