What is Kajari Teej?

Women fast, many nirjala, and in the evening worship a neem branch set in the courtyard along with an image of Parvati, then break the fast on the moon's sight with sattu (roasted gram flour with ghee and sugar) — hence 'Satudi Teej'.

A cow is fed roti smeared with ghee and gur before the women eat; kajari and Teej songs are sung in a circle, swings are hung, and married daughters receive a sindhara gift from their parents.

The story of Kajari Teej

The three monsoon Teej fasts — Hariyali (Shravana Shukla), Kajari (Bhadrapada Krishna) and Hartalika (Bhadrapada Shukla) — all commemorate Parvati's austerities to win Shiva. Kajari's neem worship and sattu are its distinctive features, and the kajari song form, sung antiphonally, is a recognised genre of Hindustani semi-classical and folk music.

History

Kajari Teej is a Bundelkhand and eastern Rajasthan women's vrata described in the regional vrata literature; the Mirzapur and Banaras kajari song traditions, and the Kajali Teej fairs of Bundelkhand, are documented from the nineteenth century.

How Kajari Teej is observed

  1. On Bhadrapada Krishna Tritiya, women in UP, Bihar, Rajasthan and MP keep Badi Teej for their husbands' well-being.
  2. A branch of neem is planted and worshipped as Nimadi Mata, and women sing kajari, the folk songs of the rains.
  3. At moonrise they offer arghya to the moon and break the fast with sattu sweets.

Regional variations

  • Bundelkhand, eastern Rajasthan, MP, UP. Neem-branch worship, the nirjala fast broken on sattu at moonrise, kajari singing, swings and the sindhara gift.

Festive foods

  • Sattu ladoo — Roasted gram flour with ghee and sugar, eaten to break the fast.

The astronomical basis

Kajari Teej is Bhadrapada Krishna Tritiya — the third tithi of the waning fortnight, in August, five days after Raksha Bandhan and about a month after Hariyali Teej. The puja is in the evening and the fast is broken at moonrise.

A lunar date: Tritiya of the dark half of Bhadrapada drifts about 11 days earlier each solar year, then jumps back ~19 days when a leap (Adhika) month is inserted.
