Parana: how to break the fast

Parana (breaking the fast) is on Thursday, 6 April 2028, from 1:39 PM to 4:11 PM (New Delhi).

Break with water and tulsi, then fruit, then a light non-grain meal; a full meal after.

What is Kamada Ekadashi?

It is the grain-free Ekadashi fast (the fasting and parana rules are on the Ekadashi page), taken with a sankalpa naming the desire and a full Vishnu puja and katha.

By its mahatmya it removes a curse and the fault of an act done in the grip of desire, and it is often kept by spouses for harmony.

The story of Kamada Ekadashi

The Bhavishyottara Purana tells that in the city of Ratnapura, under the naga king Pundarika, the gandharva Lalit and his wife Lalita loved each other deeply. Performing at court, Lalit's singing faltered as his thoughts turned to Lalita; a naga reported it, and the king cursed him to a monstrous rakshasa form. Lalita followed him into the forest and, on a vidyadhari's advice, kept the Kamada Ekadashi and dedicated its merit to him; Lalit was restored and the two returned to the celestial city.

History

The Kamada Ekadashi mahatmya is given in the Bhavishyottara and Varaha Puranas; the day-rule, parana and vrat vidhi are those of every Ekadashi (see the Ekadashi page). It is the first Ekadashi after the Purnimanta new year and falls within Chaitra Navratri.

  • Parana — Tulsi water, fruit, then a light meal.

The astronomical basis

Kamada Ekadashi is the Shukla Ekadashi of Chaitra — the Moon 120°–132° ahead of the Sun (sidereal, Lahiri), with the Sun in sidereal Meena or early Mesha. See the Ekadashi page for the day-rule and the Smarta / Vaishnava difference.

A lunar date: Ekadashi of the bright half of Chaitra drifts about 11 days earlier each solar year, then jumps back ~19 days when a leap (Adhika) month is inserted.
