Parana: how to break the fast

Parana (breaking the fast) is on Wednesday, 19 July 2028, from 5:36 AM to 8:20 AM (New Delhi).

Break with water and tulsi, then fruit, then a light non-grain meal; a full meal after.

What is Kamika Ekadashi?

It is kept as the standard grain-free Ekadashi fast (see the Ekadashi page), with tulsi offered to Vishnu the central act — a single tulsi leaf given in daan on this day is said to outweigh gold and gems.

It carries the merit ascribed to bathing at the tirthas and to the ashwamedha, and is a favoured day to dedicate the fast's merit to the ancestors.

The story of Kamika Ekadashi

The Bhavishyottara Purana, in Krishna's telling to Yudhishthira, is of a kshatriya who killed a Brahmin in a village quarrel and was then refused a place at his own father's shraddha. On a sage's counsel he kept the Kamika Ekadashi with a full tulsi puja of Vishnu; in a dream Vishnu showed him freed of the sin, and he was accepted among his people again.

History

The Ekadashi and its tulsi mahatmya are given in the Bhavishyottara and Padma Puranas; the day-rule, the parana and the vrat vidhi are those of every Ekadashi (see the Ekadashi page), and the Smarta and Vaishnava reckonings can fall a day apart in a viddha year.

  • Bhavishyottara Purana — the Kamika Ekadashi mahatmya
  • Padma Purana — the tulsi and Ekadashi mahatmyas

How Kamika Ekadashi is observed

  1. The grain-free fast is kept from sunrise with a Vishnu puja centred on tulsi leaves, a ghee lamp and the Ekadashi katha; the parana is within the Dwadashi after the Hari Vasara.
  2. Many keep a night vigil and give tulsi, food or dakshina in daan; the fast's merit is often dedicated to the ancestors.

Regional variations

  • Pan-Indian (Vaishnava households). The first Ekadashi of Chaturmas, kept alongside the Shravana intensification of Vishnu and Shiva worship.

Festive foods

  • Phalahar and the parana meal — The grain-free Ekadashi diet; broken within the Dwadashi with tulsi water, then fruit, then a light non-grain meal.

The astronomical basis

Kamika Ekadashi is the Krishna Ekadashi of Shravana — the Moon 120°–132° behind the Sun in ecliptic longitude (sidereal, Lahiri). It is the first Ekadashi after Devshayani, within Chaturmas, with the Sun in sidereal Karka. See the Ekadashi page for the day-rule and the Smarta / Vaishnava difference; the Gregorian date drifts about 11 days earlier each year.

A lunar date: Ekadashi of the dark half of Shravana drifts about 11 days earlier each solar year, then jumps back ~19 days when a leap (Adhika) month is inserted.
