Parana: how to break the fast
Parana (breaking the fast) is on Saturday, 6 May 2028, from 5:36 AM to 8:16 AM (New Delhi).
Break with water and tulsi, then fruit, then a light non-grain meal; a full meal after.
What is Mohini Ekadashi?
It is the grain-free Ekadashi fast (the fasting and parana rules are on the Ekadashi page), kept for freedom from grave sin and from delusion.
By its mahatmya it carries the merit of a great pilgrimage and cleanses what no ordinary prayaschitta can.
The story of Mohini Ekadashi
The Kurma Purana tells of Dhrishtabuddhi, the wicked son of the wealthy Dhanapala of Bhadravati, who ruined himself with vice and theft and was cast out of his home. Wandering and starving, he reached the ashram of the sage Kaundinya on the bank of the Ganga, who told him to keep the Mohini Ekadashi; his sins fell away and he reached Vishnu's abode.
History
The Mohini Ekadashi mahatmya is given in the Kurma and Padma Puranas; the day-rule, parana and vrat vidhi are those of every Ekadashi (see the Ekadashi page). It falls near Akshaya Tritiya and Narasimha Jayanti.

How Mohini Ekadashi is observed
- Vishnu is worshipped in his Mohini form, the enchantress who took the nectar of immortality from the asuras after the churning of the ocean.
- The katha from the Kurma Purana tells of Dhrishtabuddhi, a wastrel son freed from his misdeeds by keeping this fast on the sage Kaundinya's advice.
- Temples dress the deity as Mohini; devotees keep a vigil with bhajans and break the fast at the Dwadashi parana.
Regional variations
- Pan-Indian (Vaishnava). Kept for release from grave sin and delusion, with a Vishnu puja and the katha of Dhrishtabuddhi.
Festive foods
- Phalahar — Litchi, mango and curd, with makhana roasted in ghee.
- Parana — Tulsi water and a sweet of milk and sugar, the nectar of the Mohini story.
