Purnima runs 4 Aug, 11:52 → 5 Aug, 13:40.
What is Narali Purnima?
Decorated boats are taken to the shore; a golden or ornamented coconut is offered to the sea with flowers, rice, kumkum and a prayer to Varuna, and the fleet then puts out for the first catch of the season. The day's food is coconut-rich — narali bhat (sweet coconut rice), coconut karanji and modak.
Inland and among Brahmin communities the same Shravana Purnima is kept as Rakhi Purnima and, for many, as the annual changing of the sacred thread (upakarma / Shravani). The two observances share the day.
The story of Narali Purnima
Narali Purnima marks the reopening of the sea to the fishing communities after the monsoon spawning months, framed as making peace with Varuna. The coconut, whole and unbroken, is the standard offering to water in Hindu practice.

History
Narali Purnima is a Konkan coastal fishing-community festival recorded in western Indian ethnography; it coincides with the state monsoon fishing ban's usual end, and with the Brahminical Shravani upakarma.
How Narali Purnima is observed
- On the Shravan full moon, the Koli fishing communities of the Konkan coast offer a coconut to the sea, asking for calm waters.
- The offering marks the end of the monsoon fishing ban; decorated boats return to the water and the fishing season reopens.
- Koli men and women dance and sing on the beaches; the day coincides with Raksha Bandhan.
Regional variations
- Konkan coast (Maharashtra, Goa). Coconut offered to the sea by the Koli fishing communities, the fleet's first sailing of the season, and narali bhat.
- Inland Maharashtra and the North. The same day is Raksha Bandhan / Rakhi Purnima and the Shravani upakarma (sacred-thread change).
Festive foods
- Narali bhat — Sweet coconut rice with jaggery, cardamom and saffron.
- Naralachi karanji — Coconut-filled pastries.

The astronomical basis
Narali Purnima is Shravana Shukla Purnima — the full moon of Shravana, in August, the same day as Raksha Bandhan. The coconut offering is made in the daytime at high tide; there is no fasting.
A lunar date: Purnima of the bright half of Shravana drifts about 11 days earlier each solar year, then jumps back ~19 days when a leap (Adhika) month is inserted.
