Schools, colleges, the Nehru Yuva Kendras and the Ramakrishna Mission hold processions, lectures, youth conventions, sports and community-service drives; Vivekananda's speeches — above all his 1893 address at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago, beginning 'Sisters and brothers of America' — are read and discussed. The National Youth Festival is held around this date.

The story of National Youth Day

Narendranath Datta, a Calcutta college student searching for God, met the mystic Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, became his foremost disciple, and after his master's death took sannyasa as Vivekananda. He travelled India on foot, was received at the Chicago Parliament of Religions in 1893 as a voice of Hindu universalism, founded the Ramakrishna Math and Mission with its motto of service as worship, and died at thirty-nine.
