Shukla Panchami runs 01:55 → 23:10.
What is Nuakhai?
The head of the family brings the nua (new rice) home, it is cooked and offered first to Samaleswari at Sambalpur (or the local deity) at a fixed muhurta (lagna), then eaten by the family in order of age. This is followed by Nuakhai Juhar — the younger greeting the elder with folded hands and receiving blessings and small gifts.
The day closes with Nuakhai Bhetghat, a community gathering with folk dance (rasarkeli, dalkhai, sajani), songs and a shared meal. It is the biggest festival of the Kosal region and a public holiday in Odisha.
The story of Nuakhai
Nuakhai is a first-harvest thanksgiving of the Kosal / western Odisha region, historically linked to the Chauhan rulers of Patnagarh and Sambalpur and to the Samaleswari temple; the lagna for the offering is set each year by the Brahmapuri pandits of Sambalpur.

History
Nuakhai's present fixed date (Bhadrapada Shukla Panchami) was standardised in the twentieth century; before that it varied by locality between Bhadrapada and Ashwin. It is now a marker of Kosal / western-Odia cultural identity.
How Nuakhai is observed
- Western Odisha's harvest festival welcomes the new rice (nua) on Bhadrapada Shukla Panchami.
- At the lagna fixed by priests, the new rice is first offered to Samaleswari at Sambalpur and to the household deity, then eaten by the family together.
- Younger members touch the feet of elders in Nuakhai Juhar, new clothes are worn, and Dalkhai and Rasarkeli dances are performed.
Regional variations
- Western Odisha (Sambalpur, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Sundargarh). New rice offered to Samaleswari at the fixed lagna, then eaten by the family; Nuakhai Juhar greetings and the Bhetghat folk-dance gathering.
- Chhattisgarh and western Jharkhand. Kept as Navakhai / Nawakhai with the same first-grain offering to the kuldevta.
Festive foods
- Nua — The new rice, cooked plain or as kheer, eaten first by the whole family.
- Arisa and manda pitha — The festival's rice cakes.

The astronomical basis
Nuakhai is kept on Bhadrapada Shukla Panchami — the fifth tithi of the bright fortnight, the day after Ganesh Chaturthi, in August or September, at a lagna (auspicious moment) announced each year for the offering of the new grain.
A lunar date: Panchami of the bright half of Bhadrapada drifts about 11 days earlier each solar year, then jumps back ~19 days when a leap (Adhika) month is inserted.
