Parana: how to break the fast
Parana (breaking the fast) is on Wednesday, 22 March 2028, from 6:54 AM to 8:49 AM (New Delhi).
Break with water and tulsi, then fruit, then a light non-grain meal; a full meal after.
What is Papmochani Ekadashi?
It is the grain-free Ekadashi fast (the fasting and parana rules are on the Ekadashi page), taken with a sankalpa for the removal of a particular fault, and a full Vishnu puja and katha.
By its mahatmya it can remove even brahmahatya and the sin of a broken vow, and the fault of pride that a fall from tapas brings.
The story of Papmochani Ekadashi
The Bhavishyottara Purana tells that the apsara Manjughosha was sent to break the tapas of Medhavi, a young ascetic son of the sage Chyavana, in the Chaitraratha forest. She succeeded, and they lived together for years; when she asked leave, Medhavi, realizing his fall, cursed her in anger to a pishacha form. On Chyavana's counsel both kept the Papmochani Ekadashi — Medhavi to regain his tapas-shakti, and Manjughosha to be freed of the curse.
