Parana: how to break the fast

Parana (breaking the fast) is on Thursday, 31 August 2028, from 5:59 AM to 8:31 AM (New Delhi).

Break with water and tulsi, then fruit, then a light non-grain meal; a full meal after.

What is Parivartini Ekadashi?

It is the grain-free Ekadashi fast (the fasting and parana rules are on the Ekadashi page), a favoured day for the worship of Vamana, Vishnu's dwarf avatar.

By its mahatmya the fast carries the merit of the Vajapeya yajna and frees the keeper of sin.

The story of Parivartini Ekadashi

The Bhavishyottara Purana recounts the Vamana avatar: the asura king Bali had won the three worlds, and Vishnu came to his sacrifice as a dwarf brahmachari and begged three paces of ground. Granted them, he grew until two paces covered earth and heaven; for the third Bali offered his own head. Vishnu sent him to rule Patala and promised to guard his door — and on this Ekadashi turns in his cosmic sleep.

History

The Parivartini Ekadashi mahatmya and the Vamana narrative are given in the Bhavishyottara and Bhagavata Puranas; the day-rule, parana and vrat vidhi are those of every Ekadashi (see the Ekadashi page). It falls mid-Chaturmas, near Onam and Ganesh Chaturthi.

  • Bhagavata Purana — the Vamana avatar

How Parivartini Ekadashi is observed

  1. In the middle of Chaturmas, Vishnu is said to turn onto his side in his yoga-nidra, hence 'Parivartini'; it is also called Padma or Jayanti Ekadashi.
  2. Vishnu is worshipped as Vamana with tulsi, lotus and a lamp, and the story of Vamana taking the three worlds from Bali in three strides is read.
  3. Daan of curd and rice, or a pot of water, is traditional; the fast is broken at the Dwadashi parana.

Regional variations

  • Pan-Indian (Vaishnava). Kept with the worship of Vamana; the deity's image is turned on its side to mark Vishnu's turning in his sleep.

Festive foods

  • Phalahar — Cucumber, bananas and makhana kheer in the late monsoon.
  • Parana — Curd-rice is the traditional first meal, echoing the day's gift of curd and rice.

The astronomical basis

Parivartini Ekadashi is the Shukla Ekadashi of Bhadrapada — the Moon 120°–132° ahead of the Sun (sidereal, Lahiri), with the Sun in sidereal Simha. See the Ekadashi page for the day-rule and the Smarta / Vaishnava difference; the Gregorian date drifts about 11 days earlier each year.

A lunar date: Ekadashi of the bright half of Bhadrapada drifts about 11 days earlier each solar year, then jumps back ~19 days when a leap (Adhika) month is inserted.
