What is Parshuram Jayanti?

Temples and homes hold a Parashurama puja at midday (the hour of his birth), with a havan, the reading of the Parashurama-charita, and the honouring of the parashu (axe). A fast may be kept until the noon worship. Since the day is also Akshaya Tritiya, its acts of dana, new beginnings and gold-buying run alongside.

Parashurama is the kuladevata of several Brahmin communities (Chitpavan, Bhumihar, Tyagi, Nambudiri, Daivadnya) and the patron of the Konkan coast — Kerala, coastal Karnataka and the Konkan are said to be land he reclaimed from the sea by hurling his axe. He is one of the seven Chiranjivis, the deathless, and is believed to still be in tapas at Mahendragiri.

The story of Parshuram Jayanti

Parashurama was the youngest son of the sage Jamadagni and Renuka. When the king Kartavirya Arjuna stole Jamadagni's wish-cow and later had the sage killed, Parashurama took up the axe Shiva had given him and destroyed the tyrant kshatriya kings twenty-one times over, filling five lakes at Kurukshetra with blood, then gave the conquered earth to the Brahmins and withdrew to penance. In the Ramayana and Mahabharata he appears as the fierce guru of Bhishma, Drona and Karna.

The astronomical basis

Parshuram Jayanti is Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya — the third tithi of the bright fortnight, in April or May, the same tithi as Akshaya Tritiya. The puja is done in the madhyahna (midday) window, the hour tradition gives for his birth.

A lunar date: Tritiya of the bright half of Vaishakha drifts about 11 days earlier each solar year, then jumps back ~19 days when a leap (Adhika) month is inserted.

Frequently asked questions

When is Parshuram Jayanti 2028?

Parshuram Jayanti 2028 is on Thursday, 27 April 2028. Parshuram Jayanti is kept on the day when Tritiya of Vaishakha Shukla paksha prevails at Madhyahna (midday). That day is Thursday, 27 April 2028, and the Parshuram Jayanti muhurat is from 11:00 AM to 1:38 PM. Tritiya holds at midday only on this day.

Is Parshuram Jayanti the same day as Akshaya Tritiya?

Yes — both are Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya. Akshaya Tritiya is the general auspicious day of imperishable merit; Parshuram Jayanti is the same tithi kept specifically as the birthday of the sixth avatar.

Why is Parashurama called a Chiranjivi?

He is one of the seven deathless beings of tradition, believed never to have died but to remain in penance at Mahendragiri — which is why he can appear as guru to figures across different ages in the epics.
