Pateti 2028: Date, History & Significance
Tuesday
Tuesday, 15 August 2028
Pateti 2028 is on Tuesday, 15 August 2028. Pateti is the Zoroastrian day of repentance, kept on the last day of the year, the eve of Navroz. Its name comes from the Patet, the prayer of contrition; the day is spent taking stock of the year's failings, resolving to do better, and cleansing home and self before the new year begins.
What is Pateti?
The Patet prayer is recited before the fire, confessing wrong thoughts, words and deeds and turning back to asha; homes are thoroughly cleaned, and quarrels are meant to be settled. In common Indian usage 'Pateti' is often used loosely for the New Year celebration itself, but strictly it is the solemn day of preparation that precedes it.
The story of Pateti
Zoroastrian ethics turn on the accountability of every act and the freedom to choose truth over the lie at each moment. Patet — 'to turn back' — is the practice of honest self-examination and repentance that keeps that freedom alive: naming what went wrong, making amends where possible, and re-committing to good thoughts, words and deeds. Placed on the year's last day, it clears the account before the renewal of Navroz.

History
Patet is an ancient element of Zoroastrian devotion; as a fixed day before Navroz it varies with the Shahenshahi, Kadmi and Fasli calendars like the New Year itself. It is a gazetted holiday in Maharashtra and Gujarat (often listed jointly with the Parsi New Year).
How Pateti is observed
- The last day of the year closes the ten Muktad days, when the fravashis, the souls of the departed, are honoured with prayers and flowers.
- The Patet prayer of repentance is recited, at home or at the agiary, confessing the year's faults in thought, word and deed.
- The house is cleaned and made ready for the New Year the next morning.
Regional variations
- Mumbai, Pune, Gujarat. Recitation of the Patet, a thorough cleaning of the home, the settling of disputes, and quiet preparation for Navroz the next day.
Festive foods
- A simple table — Food is kept simple on the day of repentance; the feasting waits for the New Year.

The last day of the Zoroastrian year — the day before Navroz. The Zoroastrian Shahenshahi calendar has a fixed 365-day year with no leap day and has drifted against the seasons, while the Fasli reform re-fixes the year to the spring equinox.
The date is set by the Hindu lunisolar calendar and shifts against the Gregorian year.
