What is Poila Boishakh?

The morning begins with Prabhat Pheri processions and Rabindra Sangeet — Tagore's 'Esho he Boishakh' is sung at dawn; Santiniketan and the Dhaka Ramna Batamul gathering are the best known. Shops give customers sweets and a calendar, and the day is a time to settle old debts and start the ledger clean.

Kolkata's Chhatu Babu–Latu Babu Bazar, the Kalighat and Dakshineswar queues, and the Bangladesh Mangal Shobhajatra — a UNESCO-listed masked procession from Dhaka University — mark the public face of the day; at home the meal is vegetarian, with shukto, and the first mango of the season.

The story of Poila Boishakh

The Bengali San is usually traced to a revenue-year reform under Akbar, aligning the Islamic Hijri year with the solar agricultural cycle for tax collection; the year-count (1433 in 2026) runs from that adjustment. The halkhata and the merchant's puja grew from the practical need to close the fiscal year with the harvest.

History

The 'Bangabda' era and its Akbar-era origin are discussed in Bengali almanac scholarship; Tagore's songs and the Santiniketan observance shaped the modern cultural form, and in Bangladesh the Ramna Batamul concert (from 1967) and the Mangal Shobhajatra (from 1989) made the day a marker of secular Bengali identity.

How Poila Boishakh is observed

  1. Traders open new ledgers, the haal khata, after a Ganesha and Lakshmi puja; customers settle old accounts and are given sweets and a new calendar.
  2. The day begins with songs welcoming the year, and in Dhaka the Mangal Shobhajatra procession, inscribed by UNESCO, fills the streets with masks and colour.
  3. People wear new clothes, visit elders and friends with the greeting 'Shubho Noboborsho', and fairs (Boishakhi mela) run through the day.

Regional variations

  • West Bengal and Tripura. The halkhata puja in shops, Prabhat Pheri and Rabindra Sangeet, new clothes and a vegetarian feast; fairs at Santiniketan and Kalighat.
  • Bangladesh. Pohela Boishakh — the Ramna Batamul dawn concert and the Mangal Shobhajatra masked procession, a national cultural festival.

Festive foods

  • Panta bhat and ilish — Soaked rice with fried hilsa, the Bangladeshi new-year breakfast.
  • Luchi, alur dom and payesh — The festive meal in West Bengal homes.
  • Mishti — Rosogolla, sandesh and mishti doi for guests and for the haal khata.

Why this date

Poila Boishakh falls on Thursday, 13 April 2028. Bengali New Year; Mesha Sankranti day.

The astronomical basis

Poila Boishakh falls on Mesha Sankranti — the Sun's entry into sidereal Aries (Lahiri) — reckoned in the Bengali San by the sunrise rule, so it lands on 14 or 15 April. The Bangladesh calendar was fixed to 14 April by a 1966/2019 reform.

Fixed to a solar ingress — the Gregorian date barely moves (a day either way as the ingress instant drifts against the civil day).
