Pongal 2028: Date, Rituals & Significance

Saturday

Saturday, 15 January 2028

Pongal 2028 is on Saturday, 15 January 2028. Pongal is the four-day Tamil harvest festival, the thanksgiving of the farming year, kept from the last day of Margazhi into the first days of Thai. Its central act, on Thai Pongal, is boiling the season's new rice with milk and jaggery in a pot until it froths over — 'pongi varuthu!' — as an offering to the Sun.

Pongal Vidhi, step by step

  1. Prepare the spot. After an early bath, draw a kolam in the courtyard or an open, sunlit spot, and set up a stove of three bricks or a small hearth facing east.
  2. Dress the pot. Tie fresh turmeric and ginger plants round the neck of a new clay or brass pot, and mark it with turmeric, kumkum and sandal paste.
  3. Boil the milk. Pour in milk and water and bring it to the boil as the Sun rises; when it froths over the rim the household calls “Pongalo Pongal!”
  4. Cook the pongal. Add the new rice and moong dal, then jaggery, ghee, cardamom and cashews, and cook until soft.
  5. Offer to Surya. Serve the pongal on a banana leaf facing the Sun with sugarcane, bananas, a coconut, betel leaves and areca nut; wave camphor and bow to the Sun.
  6. Share. Offer some to the household deity, then share the pongal with family and neighbours.

What is Pongal?

Day one, Bhogi, burns old belongings in a bonfire at dawn. Day two, Thai Pongal, is the sunrise rice-boiling in a decorated pot before a kolam, the pot tied with turmeric plant, facing east. Day three, Mattu Pongal, honours the cattle — bathed, horns painted, garlanded, fed the pongal; jallikattu bull-taming is held in the Madurai belt. Day four, Kaanum Pongal, is for family outings and visiting kin.

The festival is deliberately without a temple as its centre — it is the household's and the farm's own thanksgiving to the Sun, the rain, the cattle and the earth. The overflowing pot is a wish for abundance, and the greeting is simply that the pot has boiled over.

The story of Pongal

Pongal is the Tamil form of the pan-Indian Makara-Sankranti harvest festival — the Sun's turn to the north and the start of Uttarayana, the auspicious half-year. A Shaiva legend attaches to Mattu Pongal: Shiva's bull Nandi, sent to tell people to bathe daily and eat monthly, muddled the message, so Shiva sent him to earth to help till the fields — hence the cattle's honour on this day.

History

Pongal is among the oldest attested Tamil festivals, referred to in the Sangam and post-Sangam corpus and in medieval inscriptions as Puthiyeedu / Thai Niradal; the four-day sequence and jallikattu (eru thazhuvuthal) are described in Sangam poetry such as the Kalithogai.

How Pongal is observed

  1. On Bhogi, the eve, old belongings are thrown into a dawn bonfire and the house is cleaned and freshly painted; kolams are drawn at every doorway.
  2. On Thai Pongal the new rice is cooked at sunrise in a new pot tied with turmeric and ginger plants, in the open and facing the Sun; when the milk froths over the rim everyone calls 'Pongalo Pongal!' and the dish is offered to Surya.
  3. Mattu Pongal honours the cattle, bathed, their horns painted and garlanded, and fed the pongal; jallikattu is held in the Madurai region. On Kaanum Pongal families go on outings, and women set out coloured rice for the crows, praying for their brothers.

Regional variations

  • Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Bhogi bonfire, the sunrise pongal pot on Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal for the cattle with jallikattu, and Kaanum Pongal outings.
  • Sri Lanka, Tamil diaspora. Thai Pongal is a public holiday in Sri Lanka; the pot-boiling and Surya offering are kept wherever Tamils have settled.

Festive foods

  • Sakkarai pongal — New rice and moong dal cooked with jaggery, ghee, cardamom and cashews: the offering itself.
  • Ven pongal — The savoury version, with pepper, cumin, ginger and ghee.
  • Sugarcane — Whole canes are part of the offering and a treat for children.
  • Kootu and vadai — Vegetable and lentil curry and lentil fritters complete the meal.

The astronomical basis

Thai Pongal is fixed to Makara Sankranti — the Sun's entry into sidereal Capricorn (Lahiri) — the first of the Tamil month Thai, near 14–15 January. Bhogi is the eve; the sidereal date drifts about a day per seventy years.

Fixed to a solar ingress — the Gregorian date barely moves (a day either way as the ingress instant drifts against the civil day).
