What is Raja Parba?
The three days are Pahili Raja (the eve), Raja Sankranti (the middle day, on Mithuna Sankranti) and Bhu Daha or Basi Raja. Girls wear new clothes and alta, do not walk barefoot on the ground, eat poda pitha and other cakes, and swing on rope and decorated swings hung from trees, singing Raja songs.
On the fourth day, Vasumati Snana, a grinding stone (sila) representing Bhudevi is bathed with turmeric water, dressed with flowers and sindoor, and offered seasonal fruit — a ritual apology and thanks to the earth before cultivation resumes. Men play kabaddi and other games.
The story of Raja Parba
'Raja' derives from 'rajas', menstrual flow; the festival personifies the earth as a young woman in her cycle and gives her — and the women of the household — three days of rest before the sowing season. It parallels the Ambubachi observance at Kamakhya in Assam at the same time of year.

History
Raja Parba is an agrarian earth-cult festival of coastal and central Odisha described in nineteenth-century gazetteers; it is now a state-recognised cultural festival with government-declared holidays.
How Raja Parba is observed
- Over three days in mid-June, Odisha honours the earth as a woman resting at the onset of the rains: Pahili Raja, Mithuna Sankranti and Bhu Daha, with Vasumati Snana on the fourth.
- Farming stops; girls wear new clothes and ornaments, do no housework, avoid walking barefoot, and play on rope and wooden swings.
- Raja songs are sung, games are played, and the earth is given a ceremonial bath on the fourth day.
Regional variations
- Odisha. Three days of rest for the earth and for women — rope swings, poda pitha, new clothes, Raja songs — and Vasumati Snana of the grinding-stone Bhudevi on the fourth day.
Festive foods
- Poda pitha — Rice, coconut and jaggery cake baked slowly over coals.
- Raja paan — A special paan chewed through the festival.

The astronomical basis
Raja Parba is timed to Mithuna Sankranti — the Sun's entry into sidereal Gemini (Lahiri), near 15 June. The eve is Pahili Raja; Raja Sankranti falls on the ingress day. The solar-ingress date is nearly fixed in the Gregorian calendar.
Fixed to a solar ingress — the Gregorian date barely moves (a day either way as the ingress instant drifts against the civil day).
