What is Rang Panchami?
Where Holi's Dhulandi is a day of wet colour and rowdiness, Rang Panchami is drier and held to be more sacred — the colour is thrown upward to invoke the deities and to raise the sattvic quality in the atmosphere. Indore's Gair procession, with tankers of coloured water and huge crowds, is the largest public celebration.
In Maharashtra and the Konkan the day closes the Shimga (Holi) period; fishing communities dance the Koli dance, and puran poli is eaten. Some hold that Holika Dahan's ash-and-colour rite is only completed on Rang Panchami.
The story of Rang Panchami
Rang Panchami extends the Holi festival to its fifth day. The idea that the colour is an offering to the descending gods, rather than only human play, is what distinguishes it; the Indore Gair is a civic tradition of the Holkar era.

The astronomical basis
Rang Panchami is Chaitra Krishna Panchami — the fifth tithi of the waning fortnight, five days after Holi (Phalguna Purnima / Chaitra Krishna Pratipada), in March. It is a daytime festival with no fasting.
A lunar date: Panchami of the dark half of Chaitra drifts about 11 days earlier each solar year, then jumps back ~19 days when a leap (Adhika) month is inserted.

Frequently asked questions
When is Rang Panchami 2028?
Rang Panchami 2028 is on Wednesday, 15 March 2028. Rang Panchami is kept on the day when Panchami of Chaitra Krishna paksha prevails at sunrise. That day is Wednesday, 15 March 2028. Panchami holds at sunrise only on this day.
How is Rang Panchami different from Holi?
It is the fifth day of the Holi period. Holi's Dhulandi is wet colour and revelry; Rang Panchami is drier gulal, thrown upward as an offering to the gods, and is held to be the more sacred of the two colour days — strongest in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Why is the colour thrown into the air?
On Rang Panchami the deities are believed to come down to play with the devotees, so gulal is thrown skyward to invite them and to charge the air with sattva, rather than only smeared on other people.
