What is Saraswati Puja?
Schools, colleges, music schools and homes install a Saraswati idol dressed in white or yellow, place books, pens, instruments and tools before her, and keep them there overnight — not to be read or played until the puja is done and they are taken up again. Children are given their first letters (hate khori / Vidyarambham), and no studying is done on the day itself.
In Bengal the day is also a spring festival of yellow — yellow saris, kites, and a khichuri bhog — and a gentle occasion for young people. In the South, Saraswati is invoked on Navratri's later days, worshipped on Navami, and the books taken up again on Vijayadashami as an auspicious start to study.
The story of Saraswati Puja
Saraswati is named in the Rigveda first as a mighty river and then as the goddess of speech (Vak) and wisdom, consort of Brahma; Vasant Panchami is held to be her appearance day, the day the power of articulate knowledge entered creation. Placing the tools of learning before her and not using them for a day is an act of acknowledging their source.
History
The Vasant Panchami Saraswati Puja is the major public form in eastern India, with community pandals in schools and neighbourhoods; the Navratri Saraswati worship (Golu, Bommai Kolu, Ayudha Puja, Vidyarambham) is the South Indian form, both drawing on the same Puranic goddess.

How Saraswati Puja is observed
- In Bengal, Odisha and Assam, Saraswati images are installed in homes, schools and colleges on Vasant Panchami.
- Students place their books and pens at the goddess's feet and do not study that day; young children begin to write in the hate khori ritual.
- Girls wear basanti yellow saris, and the morning anjali is offered by students who have fasted; the ber is not eaten until it has been offered.
Regional variations
- Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Bihar, Tripura. Vasant Panchami — Saraswati idols in schools and homes, books and instruments laid at her feet, hate khori for children, yellow dress and a khichuri bhog.
- South India. Saraswati Avahana on Navratri's seventh day, Puja on Navami with Ayudha Puja, and Vidyarambham and taking up the books on Vijayadashami.
Festive foods
- Khichuri and labra — The bhog of the day, with begun bhaja and tomato-khejur chutney.
- Kul — Ber, first offered to Saraswati, then eaten.

The astronomical basis
In eastern India Saraswati Puja is Magha Shukla Panchami — the fifth tithi of the bright fortnight of Magha, in late January or February, the same day as Vasant Panchami. In the South it is fixed within Sharad Navratri (Ashwin Shukla), on the seventh to ninth tithis.
A lunar date: Panchami of the bright half of Magha drifts about 11 days earlier each solar year, then jumps back ~19 days when a leap (Adhika) month is inserted.

Is Saraswati Puja the same as Vasant Panchami?
In eastern India, yes — Saraswati Puja is kept on Vasant Panchami (Magha Shukla Panchami). In the North and West, Vasant Panchami is more a spring festival, and Saraswati's larger worship there and in the South comes within Navratri.
Why are books not read on Saraswati Puja?
