Shab-e-Barat 2028: Date, History & Significance

Thursday

Thursday, 13 January 2028

Shab-e-Barat 2028 is on Thursday, 13 January 2028. Shab-e-Barat is the night of the fifteenth of Sha'ban, kept by many Muslims as a night of prayer, seeking forgiveness and remembering the dead. In popular belief it is a night on which God looks with mercy on his servants and the coming year's provisions and lifespans are recorded; the day after is often fasted.

What is Shab-e-Barat?

Believers spend the night in nafl (voluntary) prayer, Qur'an recitation, dhikr and du'a for themselves and the departed; many visit graveyards. In the subcontinent the night is also marked with halwa, sweets and, in some places, fireworks and lamps — customs some scholars encourage and others regard as without basis. Deobandi and Salafi-influenced Muslims keep the night's worship privately or not at all; Barelvi and Sufi communities keep it as a significant night.

The story of Shab-e-Barat

The night takes its meaning from hadith reports that on the middle night of Sha'ban God descends in mercy and forgives all who ask, except those who hold enmity or associate partners with him. 'Barat' means 'exemption' or 'clearance' — a release from the account of sin for those who seek it. The month of Sha'ban itself is a time the Prophet is reported to have fasted much, in preparation for Ramadan.

History

The status of Shab-e-Barat has been debated among Muslim scholars for centuries — some hold the supporting hadith sound, others weak. It is widely and devoutly observed across the Indian subcontinent. It is not a public holiday.

How Shab-e-Barat is observed

  1. On the night of 15 Sha'ban many Muslims stay up in prayer, seeking forgiveness and asking for the year's decree to be good.
  2. Graves of family members are visited, cleaned and prayed over; in South Asia homes and graveyards are lit with lamps.
  3. Reformist schools regard the night's customs as later additions, and observance varies widely.

Regional variations

  • Across India, especially the North and the Deccan. Night-long voluntary prayer, Qur'an and du'a, graveyard visits, halwa and sweets; fasting on the fifteenth of Sha'ban.

Festive foods

  • Halwa and roti — Chana dal or suji halwa with thin rotis, cooked at home and shared with neighbours and the poor.
