Laylat al-Qadr 2028: Date, History & Significance
Wednesday
Wednesday, 23 February 2028
Laylat al-Qadr 2028 is on Wednesday, 23 February 2028. Laylat al-Qadr — Shab-e-Qadr, the Night of Power — is the holiest night of the Islamic year, on which the Qur'an began to be revealed. The Qur'an itself says it is 'better than a thousand months', and that on it the angels and the Spirit descend by God's leave with every decree. Its exact date is hidden; it is sought in the odd nights of the last ten of Ramadan, especially the 27th.
What is Laylat al-Qadr?
Muslims seek the night with qiyam (standing in prayer through the night), Qur'an recitation, dhikr and du'a; the Prophet's own supplication for it asks for pardon. Many keep i'tikaf — a retreat in the mosque for the last ten days of Ramadan — to be sure of catching the night. Worship on Laylat al-Qadr with faith and hope of reward is said to have all past sins forgiven.
The story of Laylat al-Qadr
Surah al-Qadr, one of the shortest chapters of the Qur'an, is entirely about this night: 'We sent it down on the Night of Power. And what will make you know what the Night of Power is? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend in it, by the leave of their Lord, with every command. Peace it is, until the rising of the dawn.'
