What is Shanivar Vrat?
Saturday is kept to appease Shani, the slow, exacting judge of karma, and Hanuman, who is said to shield devotees from Saturn's harshness. Sesame oil, black sesame, black gram (urad), iron and a black cloth are offered to Shani or poured on a pipal tree; the Shani Chalisa or the Dasharatha-krita Shani stotra is read, and food or oil is given to the poor. The fast is a single meal without salt.
History
Weekday vratas (varavrata) and the weekday-Pradosh combinations are set out in the Nibandha and vrata literature and elaborated in popular Vrat Katha collections; the planetary-remedy reading is from applied jyotish. The Santoshi Mata Friday vrat is a twentieth-century addition to the older set.

How Shanivar Vrat is observed
- Kept for Shani, especially during Sade Sati or Shani's dasha, and for Hanuman.
- A mustard-oil lamp is lit under a peepal tree at dusk, and black sesame, urad and oil are offered; some look at their face in a bowl of oil and give it away (chhaya daan).
- The Shani Stotra or the Hanuman Chalisa is recited.
The phala: reward of the vrat
Phala: Relief from the hardships of Sade Sati and the Shani dhaiya, protection from delay, loss and chronic trouble, and the reward of patient, honest work.
Shanivar Vrat Vrat Katha
The Shani katha of King Vikramaditya tells how the king, having belittled Saturn among the planets, suffered Shani's seven-and-a-half years — losing his kingdom, his hands falsely cut off for theft — and was restored only when Shani, satisfied by his patience and his renewed respect, lifted the period; the king then had every home worship Shani on Saturdays.

The astronomical basis
Shanivar Vrat is not tied to a tithi: it is kept on Saturday itself, ruled in the planetary week by Shani (Saturn). A vow is usually taken for a fixed run — 16, 21 or 43 weeks — and closed with an udyapan. It recurs every seven days.
The date is set by the Hindu lunisolar calendar and shifts against the Gregorian year.
