Sheetala Satam 2028: Date, Vrat Vidhi & Significance
Friday
Friday, 14 July 2028
Sheetala Satam 2028 is on Friday, 14 July 2028, the Krishna Saptami of Shravana. Sheetala Satam is the Gujarati observance of Sheetala Mata, on Shravana Krishna Saptami. It is preceded by Randhan Chhath — 'the sixth of cooking' — on which every dish for the next day is prepared; that evening the stove is cleaned, worshipped and put out, and on Satam no fire is lit and only the previous day's cold food is eaten, offered first to the goddess.

What is Sheetala Satam?
Women rise early, bathe in cold water, and take a thali of the cold food — thepla, bajra rotla, kadhi, dal-dhokli, sweets — with curd, kumkum, a coin, water and cooled ash from the previous night's stove, to Sheetala's shrine. There they light no lamp with fire but offer the cold items, tie a thread, hear the katha, and pray for the family's health and for children to be spared pox and fever. The cold food is the day's only food.
The story of Sheetala Satam
The Sheetala Satam katha tells of a woman who lit her stove on the forbidden day; that night a spark burned her sleeping son, and searching for help she met an old woman — Sheetala herself — with her body scorched, who was cooled and healed when the woman applied curd and cold rabdi to her. The woman kept the vrat ever after, and her son was restored. The observance carries the seasonal wisdom of resting the hearth and eating light, cool food as the monsoon heat and its diseases set in.

History
Sheetala Satam is the Gujarati and Saurashtra form of the pan-Indian Sheetala worship kept elsewhere as Basoda / Sheetala Ashtami in Chaitra. Randhan Chhath and Sheetala Satam are widely observed household days in Gujarat, and the Sheetala temples of Saurashtra hold fairs.

How Sheetala Satam is observed
- The day's food is cooked in full the evening before; the hearth is then cleaned, worshipped and left cold and unused. The observer bathes in cold water at dawn and prepares the cold-food thali for the goddess.
- Sheetala is worshipped at her shrine with the cold food, curd, water, roli, a coin and (for Satam) cooled ash, a protective thread is tied, and the katha is heard; the cold food is then eaten as the day's only meal.
Regional variations
- Gujarat and Saurashtra. Randhan Chhath — all cooking done and the stove then cleaned and doused — followed by Sheetala Satam, a fireless day of cold food offered to the goddess.
Festive foods
- Basi (stale) food — Everything cooked the day before and eaten cold — sweet rice, puri, pua, raabri, thepla, bajra rotla, kadhi, dal-dhokli and jaggery sweets; curd is central. No fire is used to warm any of it.

The astronomical basis
Sheetala Satam falls on Krishna Saptami of the Krishna paksha. Following the lunar tithi, the Gregorian date shifts each year; the worship follows the day's prescribed hour — sunrise for the Sheetala rites, and the setting and rising sun for the Chhath arghyas.
A lunar date: Saptami of the dark half of Shravana drifts about 11 days earlier each solar year, then jumps back ~19 days when a leap (Adhika) month is inserted.
