Parana: how to break the fast

Parana (breaking the fast) is on Wednesday, 2 August 2028, from 5:43 AM to 8:24 AM (New Delhi).

Break with water and tulsi, then fruit, then a light non-grain meal; a full meal after.

What is Shravana Putrada Ekadashi?

It is the grain-free Ekadashi fast (the fasting and parana rules are on the Ekadashi page), kept by couples who wish for a virtuous child, with the sankalpa taken for that prayer.

By its mahatmya the pavitra offered to Vishnu completes and purifies the whole year's worship, making up whatever was left undone.

The story of Shravana Putrada Ekadashi

The Bhavishyottara Purana tells that King Mahijita of Mahishmati, childless and troubled, was told by the rishi Lomasha that in a past life he had driven a thirsty cow from a pond on a Dwadashi, and that he and his queens keeping the Shravana Shukla Ekadashi would remove the fault. They did, and a son was born to carry on the line.

History

The Putrada Ekadashi mahatmya is given in the Bhavishyottara Purana; there are two Putrada Ekadashis in the year, in Pausha and in Shravana. The pavitra offering of Shravana links the day to Pavitropana, the annual renewal of the sacred thread on the deity. The day-rule and vrat vidhi are those of every Ekadashi (see the Ekadashi page).

  • Sri Vaishnava agama — the Pavitropana renewal

How Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is observed

  1. Kept especially by couples praying for a child, and by parents for their children's welfare.
  2. Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi, yellow flowers and a lamp, and the katha is read: King Mahijit of Mahishmati, childless, kept this fast on the sage Lomasha's advice and was blessed with a son.
  3. In the Vaishnava temples of the South it is Pavitra Ekadashi, when the deity is adorned with pavitra, garlands of silk thread.

Regional variations

  • North and West India. Putrada Ekadashi — kept by couples wishing for a child, with a Vishnu vrat and the katha of King Mahijita.

Festive foods

  • Phalahar — Monsoon fruit, milk and sabudana vada.
  • Parana — Tulsi water, fruit, and a sweet shared with the children of the house.

Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is the Shukla Ekadashi of Shravana — the Moon 120°–132° ahead of the Sun (sidereal, Lahiri), with the Sun in sidereal Karka. See the Ekadashi page for the day-rule and the Smarta / Vaishnava difference; the Gregorian date drifts about 11 days earlier each year.

A lunar date: Ekadashi of the bright half of Shravana drifts about 11 days earlier each solar year, then jumps back ~19 days when a leap (Adhika) month is inserted.
