What is Tula Sankranti?
In coastal Odisha, households take a pre-dawn bath and offer kheer and cakes to the ripening rice fields, praying for a full harvest. At Talakaveri in Kodagu, a spring is believed to well up at the exact Sankranti moment (Tirtha-udbhava); pilgrims gather to see it and carry the water home. Aippasi in Tamil Nadu brings the Skanda Shashthi fast and Deepavali within the month.
The story of Tula Sankranti
The Kaveri Sankramana at Talakaveri is a river-cult observance recorded in the Kodagu tradition and colonial accounts of Coorg; Garbhana Sankranti belongs to the agrarian calendar of coastal Odisha. Both are fixed by the Tula ingress.

History
The Tirtha-udbhava at Talakaveri — a sudden welling of water in the source-tank at the Sankranti moment — is described in the Kaveri Purana tradition and in the Coorg gazetteer; the day doubles as the Kodava (Coorg) new year, Kail Polud following later in the month.

How Tula Sankranti is observed
- The Sun enters Libra in mid-October.
- In Karnataka it is Tula Sankramana: at Talakaveri the sacred spring rises at the exact moment (tirthodbhava), and pilgrims take the water home; Kodava families worship the Kaveri with a decorated coconut.
- In Odisha it is Garbhana Sankranti, when the rice is in grain and farmers offer prayers in the fields.
Regional variations
- Odisha. Garbhana Sankranti — milk-rice and cakes offered to the 'pregnant' young paddy for a good harvest.
- Karnataka (Kodagu). Kaveri Sankramana — Tirtha-udbhava at Talakaveri, when the goddess-river is believed to surge at the source; the day is also the Kodava new year.
- Assam. Kati Bihu falls in the same season — the lighting of saki lamps in the half-grown paddy fields.
Festive foods
- Kaveri water and puttu — Kodava homes serve rice puttu and curry after the Kaveri puja.

The astronomical basis
Tula Sankranti is the moment the Sun enters sidereal Libra (Lahiri), near 17 October. At Talakaveri the Tirtha-udbhava is timed to this exact moment. The sidereal date is nearly fixed against the Gregorian calendar.
Fixed to a solar ingress — the Gregorian date barely moves (a day either way as the ingress instant drifts against the civil day).
