Vat Savitri 2028: Date, Vrat Vidhi & Significance
Wednesday
Wednesday, 24 May 2028
Vat Savitri 2028 is on Wednesday, 24 May 2028, the Amavasya of Jyeshtha. Vat Savitri is a fast kept by married women for the long life of the husband. North India keeps it on the Jyeshtha Amavasya; Maharashtra and Gujarat keep it fifteen days later on the Jyeshtha Purnima as Vat Purnima. Women worship a banyan tree — winding a thread around it, offering water, and circumambulating it — and hear the story of Savitri, who followed Yama and argued her husband Satyavan back from death.

Parana: how to break the fast
The fast is broken after the banyan puja and the katha, with the soaked gram and a piece of the offered mango, then a light meal.
The puja muhurat and the day's timings depend on your city's sunrise and sunset. Choose your city to see them.
What is Vat Savitri?
The banyan (vata), long-lived and ever-spreading from its aerial roots, stands for the husband's long life and the unbroken family; the raw thread wound around its trunk is the marriage bond, renewed each year.
The story is the pativrata power of Savitri, who by her steadfastness and her speech on dharma won boon after boon from Yama and, with the last, her husband's life.
It falls in the hottest part of Jyeshtha, so the tree's shade, the water poured at its roots and the soaked gram and mango offered are seasonal as well as ritual. Women keep it in full shringar and exchange vaan (a basket of gifts).
History
The Savitri vrata is old in the dharmashastra as a pativrata observance; both the North's Jyeshtha Amavasya dating and the West's Jyeshtha Purnima dating are attested in the nibandha literature.
It is kept strongly in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan on the Amavasya, and in Maharashtra and Gujarat on the Purnima as Vat Purnima, where new brides keep it for the first five years.
The banyan itself — a tree that can outlive many human generations and shelter a village — has made it a natural emblem of longevity across the sub-continent.

How Vat Savitri is observed
- The fast is kept nirjala or phalahar from sunrise; women dress in full shringar and go to a banyan tree.
- Water and milk are poured at the roots, haldi-kumkum and roli applied to the trunk, and flowers, soaked gram, sattu and whole mango offered.
- A raw cotton thread is wound around the trunk while circumambulating it seven or 108 times, and a kalava is tied; the Savitri-Satyavan katha is heard while a hand-fan is waved.
- Vaan is exchanged among the women, and the fast is broken after the puja, often with the soaked gram and a piece of mango.
The phala: reward of the vrat
Phala: The long life, health and akhand saubhagya of the husband — by the katha, the power to win a life back from Yama by steadfast dharma.
Vat Savitri Vrat Katha
Savitri, daughter of King Ashwapati, chose as her husband Satyavan, a prince living in forest exile whose father had lost his kingdom and his sight — though the sage Narada warned that Satyavan had only a year to live.
On the appointed day she fasted and followed Satyavan into the forest. When Yama came and drew out his soul, she followed on foot. Moved by her words on truth and duty, Yama offered her boons: her father-in-law's sight and kingdom restored, her own father a hundred sons.
At last she asked for sons of her own — without naming that they must be Satyavan's — and Yama, having granted it, was bound to return Satyavan to life. The couple went home, and in time the boons came true.

vaṭa siñcāmi te mūlaṁ salilair amṛtopamaiḥ; yathā śākhā-praśākhābhir vṛddho'si tvaṁ mahītale, tathā putraiś ca pautraiś ca sampannaṁ kuru me kulam
O banyan, I water your root with water like nectar; as you have grown on the earth with branch upon branch, so make my family full with sons and grandsons (the traditional prayer to the vata).
Niyam & who should not fast
- Keep the fast nirjala from sunrise until the banyan puja (a phalahar form where health does not allow).
- Keep the full shringar and, for married women, the mangalsutra and sindoor; do not remove them for the day.
- Hear the Savitri-Satyavan katha before the parana.
- Do not cut or harm a banyan; water and honour it.
- Keep the vrat every year once begun, where that is the family custom (or for the first five years, for a new bride keeping Vat Purnima).
Who should not keep this fast: Pregnant and nursing women, the ill, the elderly and anyone for whom a waterless fast in high heat is unsafe should keep a phalahar (fruit and water) form and consult a doctor. The vrat asks for devotion, not for harm.
Regional variations
- Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan. Vat Savitri Amavasya — the banyan puja with the thread and parikrama, the katha with the pankha, and vaan-daan; kept the full nirjala fast by many.
- Maharashtra and Gujarat. Vat Purnima, fifteen days later on the Jyeshtha full moon — new brides keep it for their first five years, with the same banyan worship and the wax-thread winding.
- Odisha. Savitri Amavasya (Savitri Brata) — a major fast for married women, with the banyan and the reading of the Savitri story in Odia.
Festive foods
- Bhiga chana and whole mango — Soaked black gram and the season's mango, offered to the banyan and eaten to break the fast.
- Sattu, gur and puri — Given in vaan and shared; the sattu is a seasonal cooling food of Jyeshtha.
- Nothing during the vrat — Kept nirjala by many from sunrise until the banyan puja is complete.

The astronomical basis
In North India Vat Savitri is the Jyeshtha Amavasya — the new moon, when the Moon and Sun share the same ecliptic longitude (sidereal Lahiri); Maharashtra and Gujarat keep it on the opposite tithi, the Jyeshtha Purnima, fifteen days later. It falls in the hottest part of the year, with the Sun in sidereal Vrishabha or Mithuna. The Gregorian date drifts about 11 days earlier each year and jumps back ~19 days in an adhika-month year; the Amavasya and Purnima forms are therefore always a fortnight apart.
A lunar date: Amavasya of the dark half of Jyeshtha drifts about 11 days earlier each solar year, then jumps back ~19 days when a leap (Adhika) month is inserted.

Who keeps Vat Savitri?
Married women, for the long life and wellbeing of the husband. In Maharashtra and Gujarat new brides keep Vat Purnima for their first five years; elsewhere many keep it every year for life.
What is the thread wound around the tree?
A raw cotton thread (sut), wound around the trunk seven or one hundred and eight times while circumambulating it, standing for the marriage bond tied afresh each year; a kalava is tied on the wrist as well.
