What is Vishwakarma Puja?

An image of Vishwakarma — a wise elder with a crown, holding a bow, a measuring rod, a water-pot and tools, on a swan or an elephant — is installed with a kalash, worshipped with flowers, incense, a lamp and khichdi or a sweet bhog, and the tools of the trade are placed before it with a tilak. No work is done on the machines that day.

It is a workers' and craftspeople's festival, strongest in Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam, Bihar and the industrial belts, where whole factories and unions hold a common puja, followed by a feast and, in Bengal, kite-flying. The image is immersed a day or more later. The Vishwakarmavamshi / Vishwabrahmin communities (smiths, carpenters, sculptors) keep it as their kuladevata festival.

The story of Vishwakarma Puja

The two Vishwakarma hymns of Rigveda 10 praise him as the all-maker who shaped heaven and earth, gave the gods their names, and is the one architect and sacrificer of the cosmos. The Puranas make him the builder of Lanka, of Dwaraka, of Indra's hall, of the Pushpaka chariot, of the gods' weapons, and the father or teacher of all craft — the smith and carpenter's own deity.

History

Vishwakarma is Vedic, but the modern factory-and-workshop puja fixed to Kanya Sankranti is an industrial-era practice that spread through Bengal and eastern India in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with the mills, foundries and railways; it is now kept across Indian industry.

How Vishwakarma Puja is observed

  1. On Kanya Sankranti, workshops, factories and offices worship Vishwakarma, the divine architect, and their own tools and machines.
  2. Machines are cleaned and rested for the day, and pandals with his image, seated on an elephant, are set up in industrial areas.
  3. In Bengal and Bihar the sky fills with kites, and workers share a meal together.

Regional variations

  • Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam, Bihar. Factory and workshop pujas, worship of tools, machines and vehicles, a common feast, and kite-flying in Bengal.
  • Vishwabrahmin / Vishwakarma communities. Kept as the kuladevata festival by smiths, carpenters, goldsmiths, braziers and sculptors across India.

Festive foods

  • The offering and the food — Khichdi and a sweet bhog shared as a common workshop feast.

The astronomical basis

Vishwakarma Puja is fixed to Kanya Sankranti — the Sun's entry into sidereal Virgo (Lahiri) — which falls on 16 or 17 September almost every year. Because it follows the solar ingress and not a lunar tithi, its Gregorian date barely moves, unusually for a Hindu festival.

Fixed to a solar ingress — the Gregorian date barely moves (a day either way as the ingress instant drifts against the civil day).
