What is World Environment Day?

The day is marked by tree-planting drives, clean-ups of rivers, beaches and public spaces, bans or pledges on single-use plastic, school and college projects, and government announcements of environmental measures. In India it aligns with campaigns such as afforestation drives and, in recent years, 'Plant for Mother' (Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam). The chosen annual theme — biodiversity, plastic pollution, land restoration and others — frames the events.

The story of World Environment Day

The 1972 Stockholm Conference was the first major international meeting on the environment, producing a declaration of principles and leading to the creation of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). World Environment Day was designated by the General Assembly to keep the momentum, giving governments and citizens a fixed date each year to focus attention and act.
