Parana: how to break the fast
Parana (breaking the fast) is on Monday, 19 June 2028, from 1:46 PM to 4:34 PM (New Delhi).
Break with water and tulsi, then fruit, then a light non-grain meal; a full meal after.
What is Yogini Ekadashi?
It is the grain-free Ekadashi fast (the fasting and parana rules are on the Ekadashi page), kept for health, for the lifting of an affliction, and for reunion with those one is parted from.
By its mahatmya the fast heals disease and removes a curse, and it opens the run of the Chaturmas Ekadashis.
The story of Yogini Ekadashi
The Brahmavaivarta Purana tells of Hem-mali, a yaksha gardener of Kubera at Alakapuri who brought lotuses each day for Kubera's Shiva puja. One day, delayed by love for his wife Vishalakshi, he was late; Kubera cursed him to leprosy and to be parted from her on earth. Wandering, he met the sage Markandeya, who told him to keep the Yogini Ekadashi; he was cured and reunited with his wife.

History
The Yogini Ekadashi mahatmya is given in the Brahmavaivarta Purana; the day-rule, parana and vrat vidhi are those of every Ekadashi (see the Ekadashi page). It falls in Ashadha, just before Devshayani Ekadashi and Chaturmas.

How Yogini Ekadashi is observed
- Falling between Nirjala and Devshayani, it is kept for Vishnu and is held to cure disease and remove grave sins.
- The katha tells of Hemamali, a gardener of Kubera cursed with leprosy for neglecting his duty, cured when he kept this fast on the sage Markandeya's advice.
- Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi, flowers and a lamp; the merit is said to equal feeding 88,000 Brahmins, and the fast is broken at the Dwadashi parana.
Regional variations
- Pan-Indian (Vaishnava). Kept for the cure of disease and the lifting of a curse of separation, with a Vishnu puja and the katha of Hem-mali.
Festive foods
- Phalahar — Early-monsoon fruit, coconut water and sabudana.
- Parana — Tulsi water and fruit, then a light, easily digested meal.
