Nirnaya Sindhu quotes Vyasa: “trimuhūrtaḥ pradoṣaḥ syād bhānāv astaṃ gate sati”, that is, Pradosh is the three muhurtas after the sun has set. Three of the night's fifteen muhurtas are its first fifth, worked out from this city's own sunset.
Why Pradosh begins at 4:23 PM in Kohima
Sunset, and with it Pradosh, comes 62 minutes earlier in Kohima than in New Delhi (5:25 PM). Kohima lies 16.9° east of New Delhi. The Earth turns through that in about 68 minutes, so on longitude alone the sun sets 68 minutes earlier here. Kohima's latitude takes back 6 minutes of that: it changes the length of the day and of the night.
