Nirnaya Sindhu quotes Vyasa: “trimuhūrtaḥ pradoṣaḥ syād bhānāv astaṃ gate sati”, that is, Pradosh is the three muhurtas after the sun has set. Three of the night's fifteen muhurtas are its first fifth, worked out from this city's own sunset.
Why Pradosh begins at 6:01 PM in Mangaluru
Sunset, and with it Pradosh, comes 36 minutes later in Mangaluru than in New Delhi (5:25 PM). Mangaluru lies 2.4° west of New Delhi. The Earth turns through that in about 9 minutes, so on longitude alone the sun sets 9 minutes later here.
