Nirnaya Sindhu quotes Vyasa: “trimuhūrtaḥ pradoṣaḥ syād bhānāv astaṃ gate sati”, that is, Pradosh is the three muhurtas after the sun has set. Three of the night's fifteen muhurtas are its first fifth, worked out from this city's own sunset.
Why Pradosh begins at 6:01 PM in Panaji
Sunset, and with it Pradosh, comes 36 minutes later in Panaji than in New Delhi (5:25 PM). Panaji lies 3.4° west of New Delhi. The Earth turns through that in about 14 minutes, so on longitude alone the sun sets 14 minutes later here. Panaji's latitude adds another 22 minutes: it changes the length of the day and of the night.
