Nirnaya Sindhu quotes Vyasa: “trimuhūrtaḥ pradoṣaḥ syād bhānāv astaṃ gate sati”, that is, Pradosh is the three muhurtas after the sun has set. Three of the night's fifteen muhurtas are its first fifth, worked out from this city's own sunset.
Why Pradosh begins at 5:50 PM in Salem
Sunset, and with it Pradosh, comes 25 minutes later in Salem than in New Delhi (5:25 PM). Salem lies 0.9° east of New Delhi. The Earth turns through that in about 4 minutes, so on longitude alone the sun sets 4 minutes earlier here. Salem's latitude takes back 29 minutes of that: it changes the length of the day and of the night.
