Nirnaya Sindhu quotes Vyasa: “trimuhūrtaḥ pradoṣaḥ syād bhānāv astaṃ gate sati”, that is, Pradosh is the three muhurtas after the sun has set. Three of the night's fifteen muhurtas are its first fifth, worked out from this city's own sunset.
Why Pradosh begins at 5:58 PM in Kolhapur
Sunset, and with it Pradosh, comes 33 minutes later in Kolhapur than in New Delhi (5:25 PM). Kolhapur lies 3.0° west of New Delhi. The Earth turns through that in about 12 minutes, so on longitude alone the sun sets 12 minutes later here. Kolhapur's latitude adds another 21 minutes: it changes the length of the day and of the night.
