Nirnaya Sindhu quotes Vyasa: “trimuhūrtaḥ pradoṣaḥ syād bhānāv astaṃ gate sati”, that is, Pradosh is the three muhurtas after the sun has set. Three of the night's fifteen muhurtas are its first fifth, worked out from this city's own sunset.
Why Pradosh begins at 5:56 PM in Pune
Sunset, and with it Pradosh, comes 31 minutes later in Pune than in New Delhi (5:25 PM). Pune lies 3.4° west of New Delhi. The Earth turns through that in about 13 minutes, so on longitude alone the sun sets 13 minutes later here. Pune's latitude adds another 18 minutes: it changes the length of the day and of the night.
